In 1997 Dave opened Vacation Bicycle Rentals, a small company providing visitors to Redding with bicycles to explore the scenic Sacramento River Trail. To attract customers he assembled a fleet of bicycles, tricycles, 4-wheeled cycles, and gas or electric powered cycles. After only a few months he observed the special interest of senior citizens and physically challenged individuals. Then when a physical therapist asked if he would present a demonstration at the local Opportunity Center and Sports Camp, Dave relates that his experience of fitting cycles for physically challenged youth “forever changed my life”. So in 1997 he re-named his business Abilities First Cycle Shop to reflect his newfound joy in supporting his client’s abilities over their disabilities. When asked about his philosophy, Dave says, “my firm belief is that anyone who wants to ride should be given that chance. If with modern technology man has the ability to walk on the moon, then surely he can provide the physically challenged the opportunity to ride a bike or trike here on Earth.”
