Lassen Volcanic National Park
If your prefer a cooler & loftier change of scenery then why not try some of Northern California's beautiful mountain country. Lassen Volcanic National Park is located in Northeastern California at the southern end of the Cascade Mountains. Located approximately 1 hour driving time in your Plymouth RV or 50 miles east of Redding California. With Lassen park entrance at a nice cool 6,000' or so and the mountain peak at a lofty 10,457 feet above sea level, this is a wonderful place to beat the heat while enjoying swimming, hiking, fishing, or just set back and take in the pure beauty of this mountainous treasure from your private motorhome rental. Today this Volcanic mountain park contains approximately 150 square miles, or over 106,000 acres for your enjoyment...
In May 1914, Lassen Peak burst into eruption, beginning a cycle of sporadic volcanic outbursts. The climax of this episode took place in 1915, when the peak blew an enormous mushroom cloud some 7 miles into the stratosphere. The reawakening of this volcano profoundly altered the surrounding landscape. The park is a compact laboratory of volcanic phenomena and associated thermal features except true geysers. It is part of a vast geographic unit - a great lava plateau with isolated volcanic peaks - that also encompasses Lava Beds National Monument, California, and Crater Lake National Park, Oregon.
Before the 1980 eruption of Mount Saint Helen's in Washington, Lassen Peak was the most recent volcanic outburst in the continuous 48 states.
Over 150 miles of trails and a scenic highway provide access to volcanic wonders including steam vents, mudpots, boiling pools, volcanic peaks, and painted dunes. There is also a trail to the 10,457 ft. peak of this wondrous mountain where you will find some of the most beautiful views in all of Northern California.. You can park your motorhome in the parking lot at the base of the trail. Several clear lakes and streams are available for fishing. Bicycles are permitted on park roads and in campgrounds. The Park also has facilities to meet, in many cases, special needs of phisically challanged RVers.
